In an extraordinary interview with Vulture, “Westworld” star Thandie Newton opens up about her 30-year career in movies, an industry that she says systematically mistreats women, particularly women of color.
Even the powerful men in Hollywood who tried very hard to be nice could be “scary” and difficult to work with, Newton, 47, said, recounting to Vulture her intense experience working with Tom Cruise in the 2000 blockbuster “Mission: Impossible 2.”
Yes, Cruise tried “superhard to be a nice person,” the Emmy Award-winning Newton told Vulture, but the famously hard-driving actor couldn’t help himself.
“I was so scared of Tom. He was a very dominant individual,” the British-born Newton said, explaining why she would never work with him again.
Cruise’s overly friendly, domineering personality had him “being very generous and open about sharing Scientological stuff,” Newton told Vulture. He would shower her with Church of Scientology-related Christmas gifts and books on the cult-like organization, of which Cruise is a leading celebrity member.
“I was curious, because it’s like, Wow, if it’s going to attract people, powerful, high-profile people, there’s got to be some glue that sticks this (expletive) together,” Newton told Vulture.
But Newton said she “didn’t find any” glue.
The actress also revealed how Cruise got so frustrated while trying to film a night scene for “Mission: Impossible 2” that he grew a large white-topped pimple in the course of several hours.
In the scene, Cruise’s super spy Ethan Hunt and Newtom’s thief Nyah Nordoff-Hall had a confrontation on a balcony in Spain. But Newton told Vulture Cruise wasn’t happy with how she was saying her lines, which she said were pretty horrible. She said he grew increasingly frustrated during the rehearsal, during which he insisted that each read the other character’s lines.
“It was the most unhelpful,” Newton said. “It just pushed me further into a place of terror and insecurity. It was a real shame. And bless him. And I really do mean bless him, because he was trying his damnedest.”
But Newton said “a slight red mark” she noticed on Cruise’s nose at the beginning of the night grew into “a big whitehead” by the end of the night.
“I kid you not — this is how his metabolism is so fierce — he had a big whitehead where that red dot was,” Newton told Vulture. “It would take anyone else 48 hours to manifest a zit. I saw it growing, and it was like the zit was me, just getting bigger and bigger.”
Newton said they later reshot the scene, and she managed to give the performance Cruise apparently wanted. “He just wanted this alpha bitch,” Newton told Vulture. “And I did as best as I could. It’s not the best…
