Former wrestling rivals Dwayne Johnson and John Cena are facing off again, this time at the box office with their franchise movies in 2021. In the years since “The Rock” and “The Champ” faced off in the main events at WrestleMania 28 and 29, both wrestlers-turned actors have carved out a sizable space for themselves in Hollywood. Johnson, of course, has evolved into a mega-star with multiple blockbusters and even an HBO series (Ballers) under his belt. Cena, meanwhile, is a ways behind when it comes to achieving superstardom, but is starting to gain traction after demonstrating his comedy chops in films like Trainwreck, Blockers, and (to a lesser degree) the Transformers prequel Bumblebee.

In addition, the pair have firmly put their “rivalry” behind them, with Cena apologizing (on multiple occasions) for having originally criticized Johnson’s decision to retire from wrestling and pursue a full-time acting career. They’re even working together professionally now, with Cena being set to star in the upcoming Robert Ludlum adaptation The Janson Directive from Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions. At the same time, as a result of their continuing efforts to evolve their respective brands, they’re also on their way to colliding once more, albeit in a very different arena – the global box office.
